Hiking in Jotunheimen

Enjoy the view from the top of Norway’s highest mountain Galdhøpiggen, walk along the narrow, but popular Besseggen ridge, and try some of the traditional food from the area. This is the perfect tour for a hiking lover!

Jotunheimen is a largely undisturbed mountain area in Eastern Norway, covering an area of roughly 3,500 square kilometres. The mountain range is Norway’s most popular national park and includes the country’s two highest mountains Galdhøpiggen (2,469 metres above sea level) and Glittertind (2,464 metres above sea level), as well as waterfalls, rivers, lakes, glaciers, and valleys.

The area has the largest concentration of mountains higher than 2,000 metres in Northern Europe and offers some of the most scenic hiking on the continent – everything from short strolls to multi day hut to hut epics.

One of the highlights is the path along the narrow Besseggen ridge from Memurubu lodge to Gjendesheim lodge. The view southwards over an emerald coloured Gjendevatnet lake (984 metres above sea level) and northwards over Bessvatnet lake (1,373 metres above sea level) is a real treat.

Jotunheimen is ideal for cross-country and alpine skiers, cyclists and climbers who enjoy the experience of basically undisturbed nature and fresh air. Other popular activities in Jotunheimen include glacier walking, rafting, climbing, caving, canyoning, and horseback riding.

Jotunheimen has a long culinary tradition and some popular local produce include herbs, cured meat, sausages, cheese, jam, and bread.

DAY 2: BESSEGGEN

We eat an early breakfast, send our luggage with the boat and start the day's hike, which normally takes 7–8 hours. It is no coincidence that Besseggen is one of Norway's most popular hikes, and each year around 30,000 tourists enjoy the breathtaking view from the top of the ridge. The fantastic view across the wild Jotunheimen mountains and the steep sections that give hikers a great sense of mastery, combined with the fact that it is not a particularly difficult hike, are part of what makes it so popular. Standing on top of the ridge that we descend, you can see the green glacial lake Gjende on one side and the deep-blue Bessvatnet lake on the other – this a landscape full of contrasts! We come down to Memurubu cabin, which is set in an idyllic location by the lake.

Bukkelægret is known for its rich fauna, so this is a lovely hike in lush landscape. Overnight at Gjendebu Cabin.
