Summer adventure in Kirkenes

Even when the snow is gone, the summer in northern Norway is still another kind of summer. There is still much to discover and much to do, experiencing the stark contrast between the seasons of the north.

When the Snowhotel has melted back into the fjord, a new world starts to unfold. Brooks starts trickling, trees slowly spring into green, flowers bloom and unique wild berries starts ripening. The midnight sun is in the sky all day and night, providing light and energy to recharge batteries for dark winter months.  The feeling of northern summer can only be experienced - when standing on top of a mountain breathing in the fresh air, and drinking the best and cleanest water in the world straight from a stream.

Kirkenes is the capital of the municipality of Sør-Varanger.
The municipality is located as far north-east as possible in Norway, close to the Varanger fjord. We belong to the northernmost county in Norway, Finnmark.
Kirkenes center is located 69° 43' 40" north and 30° 2' 40" east.
Taking into account the surrounding settlements, there is a population of approx. 6000 in the Kirkenes area.

Kirkenes, Dresden and Malta have got one thing in common: These cities were heavily bombed during World War 2. Kirkenes had more than 300 bombing raids from Soviet airplanes, and more than 1000 times during the war years, the Air Raid alarms were sounded. This was because Kirkenes was one of the most strategically important places in Europe during the war. Visit Andersgrotta –Kirkenes’ largest bomb-shelter, built in 1943. Andersgrotta is constructed beneath the bedrock in the centre of Kirkenes, a brilliantly well hidden location. We will show a 9 minute
unique archive film, explaining why Kirkenes was bombed and how life as a civilian was during the war.
